What Is a Zinc-Carbon Battery?

Zinc-carbon batteries — also referred to as heavy duty or carbon-zinc cells — are one of the oldest and most widely produced primary (single-use) battery chemistries in the world. The cell relies on an oxidation reaction between a zinc anode and a manganese dioxide cathode, with an aqueous ammonium chloride or zinc chloride electrolyte acting as the ionic conductor.

The zinc-carbon Type D single-use battery is the largest of the standard cylindrical cell formats, providing a substantially larger electrode surface area and electrolyte volume than AA or C cells. This translates directly into higher overall capacity, making it the preferred choice for power-hungry devices that run continuously over extended periods.

Compared to alkaline D-size cells, zinc-carbon batteries operate at a lower cost per unit and are well-suited to devices with low-to-medium continuous drain, such as radios, wall clocks, portable lanterns, toys, and remote controls. For intermittent-use devices, the zinc-carbon chemistry performs especially well because rest periods allow partial voltage recovery.

R20P Full Specification Table

The zinc-carbon Type D single-use battery (model R20P) is built on electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) cathode technology and a zinc anode, delivering a nominal 1.5 V open-circuit voltage with stable discharge characteristics for low-to-medium drain applications.

EMD Cathode Advantage: HW Energy uses Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide in the R20P cathode — a higher-purity grade that improves capacity retention at moderate drain rates compared to natural MnO₂, ensuring the battery maintains working voltage longer during use.

Zinc-Carbon vs. Alkaline D-Cell: Key Differences

Understanding the differences between zinc-carbon and alkaline chemistries helps you select the right battery for each application. The table below compares the HW Energy R20P (zinc-carbon D) against the HW Energy LR20 (alkaline D).

Where Are Type D Zinc-Carbon Batteries Used?

The large cell format and cost-efficient chemistry make the zinc-carbon Type D battery a practical choice across a broad range of consumer and light-industrial applications. The table below groups common devices by drain category to help match battery selection to usage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the R20P and R20 designations?
R20 is the IEC base designation for a D-size zinc-carbon cell. The suffix "P" (Heavy Duty) indicates the cell uses a higher-purity electrolytic manganese dioxide cathode and an improved separator compared to the standard R20 (General Purpose) grade, resulting in greater capacity and improved leakage resistance.
Can the R20P replace an alkaline D (LR20) battery?
Yes — the R20P shares the same physical dimensions and 1.5 V nominal voltage as the LR20 alkaline D cell. It is a drop-in replacement for low-to-medium drain applications. For high-drain devices, the LR20 alkaline is recommended for longer runtime.
How should zinc-carbon D batteries be stored?
Store at room temperature (15–25 °C), away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Avoid storing batteries in devices for extended periods to prevent potential leakage when the cell is depleted.
Are HW Energy R20P batteries available in private-label packaging?
Yes. HW Energy offers full OEM and private-label customisation, including custom artwork, multi-language labelling, and tailored carton configurations. Contact our sales team for details.
Does HW Energy make other heavy duty battery sizes?
Yes. The Heavy Duty (Carbon-Zinc) range includes five sizes: AAA R03PAA R6PC R14P, D R20P (this page), and 9V 6F22.
What certifications do HW Energy batteries hold?
HW Energy batteries comply with IEC 60086, RoHS, and EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542. Additional certifications are detailed on the certifications page.
